Jobseekers, Don't Shoot Yourself in the Foot!
By: Kurtis Tompkins
In this age of social media, many fail to realize that they are seen before they are seen. What is meant by this statement?
In times past, folks could be introduced via phone to get to know someone before meeting them. In this age of the internet, all you will need is some identifying information and you can find out a wealth of information about someone via social media updates. We post our views on endless topics, vacation and everyday photos, memories with family and friends, stories to vent our frustrations, business advertisements, professional advice, etc., and even when we don’t know it, there are people watching.
While social media is used according to each person’s preference, what impact does it really have in the long run? I want to put something on the minds of jobseekers. During this pandemic labeled as COVID19, there are many requests made by officials to help stop the spread of the virus. The virus is spreading rapidly in many parts of the world and folks are dying daily because of it.
Some of us openly declare our lack of concern for what’s going on by doing the complete opposite of what’s recommended, and we decide that we want to post about it on social media. Yes, you can leave the house to take a walk, let your pets get some air, travel to get essential items, etc., all while maintaining APPROPRIATE DISTANCING from other people.
However, some want to continue doing what they please as if things are not serious. This is a choice and although I strongly disagree with that way of thinking, I am here with a different message.
Your posts of continuing life as if nothing is going on and openly proclaiming that you have rights and don’t have to abide by anything because “I can’t get sick” or “they can’t do that” may come back to bite you when you least suspect it. Your written expression of this way of thinking will help you to be “seen” (perceived) in a certain light.
Many companies are going under and some of these people have lost jobs as a result. They are taking this time to relax and do all they desired to do while they were working, in spite of this pandemic. Applying for jobs when the crisis goes away will be next on the agenda.
What will be said when you are qualified to do many jobs, but no one wants to call you in for an interview? “Why wouldn’t they want to see me?” some may ask. Your social media profiles will solidify you as a HUGE COMPLIANCE RISK!
If you can’t comply with simple things to help save lives, what will you do when an employer asks you to do a simple task out of scope because of a pressing situation at work? Will you say that’s not in my description and keep doing what you want?
“Kurtis doesn’t know what he is talking about”; some may say. Then comes the moment of truth; the hiring manager takes a look at your social media profiles.

What is the point of this article? It’s a message that needs to spread; Don’t shoot yourself in the foot jobseekers! Not agreeing with things for whatever reason is your right. Openly defying requests to comply with lifesaving orders is a choice; one that can come back to bite you.
Don’t let this be you.
